Crossing Grassau

by Bert Schwarz

The Saltalpes trail from Prien am Chiemsee leads over 233 km through the Chiemgau and the Berchtesgadener Land to Obertraun at the Hallstätter See at the foot of the Dachstein mountains in Austria.

We have often driven through Grassau and Rottau. But wait! We missed something.

We left our car, got out and were welcomed by beautiful nature, healthy air and hospitable people.

The idea of being here somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Bavaria should be dropped very quickly, the speed you bring with you drops off all by yourself during leisurely walks along the Tiroler Ache, hikes in the naturally protected high moor of the Kendlmühlfilzen or to the Grassauer Almen - with a guide.

The museum "Klaushäusl" is the only one of the brine pumping stations in the catchment area of the Reichenhall brine springs to have been completely preserved and shows the history of the Kendlmühlfilzen nature reserve.

The Moor and Peat Museum in Rottau, an old and listed peat station, offers interesting insights into peat extraction in the moor during a guided tour. The highlight of this guided tour is a ride on the existing light railway.
