The Dordogne is a land of tobacco cultivation and processing. You can still see many tobacco darns in the countryside, and some farmers still grow this plant, which originated in South America. Tobacco was originally used by the Native American peoples. Tobacco has been used for more than 3000 years and this museum tells its story.

It does not promote the tobacco industry, nor is it dedicated to smokers. Its collection is unique in Europe and recalls the history of an extraordinary plant that, over the millennia, was sometimes considered divine, sometimes cursed. Its train around the world started from America, where it was used for 3,000 years before conquering first Africa and then the rest of the world. It has shaped virtually all civilizations sociologically, economically, culturally, artistically and politically.
